New Formats Make More Dramatic MotoGP Qualifying
MotoGP 2013 season introduced a new format for the qualifiers, where there are Q1 and Q2. According to the premier class riders, this new format is a new tactical element that increases the potential obstacles.
If you want to directly penetrate Q2, which is the session for menentuk pole position, the rider must be in the top 10 during the three free practice. If not, then they must first pass through Q1 session, which passed only the top two riders to go in Q2, and joined with 10 other riders (10 in the three free practice).
Having won the first pole of the season at the Losail Circuit, Qatar, Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo said that the new system makes it more difficult for qualified candidates.
"It's different than last year. There are many risks - I think it's great," Lorenzo said as quoted by Autosport, Friday (04/12/2013).
"You have 30 minutes to work on the motor and the speed of the race, then you only have four laps to appear for the best that you get a grid position."
Lorenzo's teammate, Valentino Rossi, who had to settle for seventh place qualifying result are stuck in traffic, said that the right time is the key to achieve the best results in the new format.
"You need to understand the situation and learn your strategy so that it can be at the right moment," said the seven-time MotoGP world champion is.
"Some riders start first (earlier is on track) and a few more little wait. When you have more time on the track is shorter, it will be easier.
"When I headed to the pits for new tires, I was 15 seconds behind Lorenzo and 15 seconds later I came out and was in a group of riders. And that's the difference in Losail."
Yamaha Tech 3 rider, Cal Crutchlow, adding that the change makes the qualifications more dramatic.
"I do not object to it," said the British rider. "It's good for the audience and the fans and the drivers.
"I do not care if there are 40 riders on the track, because there will always be riders there. If you make a mistake and hit them, they will ask why."
